The Australian Hotel, 100 Cumberland St, The Rocks. Ph 02 92472229 Fx 02
9241 3262 . A great pub in The Rocks where one can always find a beer you like, a pizza for their mood and great company as well. What else do you need? Maybe a booking for Thursday and Friday. The
Australian Hotel use to only have four beers. The four from the George
IV Hotel in Picton. That was how I discovered this place and fell in
love with these fine lagers. But like all things great, time does march
on, and some changes are for the good and some for the bad. I will let
you make your mind up. One of the changes is the introduction of pokies (before there were none), but luckily they have a room to themselves so at least they are not inflicted on us. The next change was the introduction of main stream beers on the taps, but they did keep two of the four Picton brews, the Scharer's and the Boch, both great beers and I highly recommend them, but wait, for the beer lover there is more. We must be talking about one of the most extensive range of boutique Australian bottled beers in Australia. They have all tastes catered for. The gourmet pizzas here are fantastic, right from the Crispy bacon and sundried tomato to the Thai Crocodile (and even the vegetarian gets a ten out of ten). In fact this place is so popular for a Thursday or Friday lunch or dinner you better book a few day ahead (and try to get an outside table). For larger parties they have a rooftop for hire, I say just do it. The bar itself is split level (so really two bars), and it has a pressed tin roof (god I love a pressed tin roof). The bar while being on the small size does look larger due to the fact there are large mirrors strategically placed high on the walls. Other interesting facts are there is an archelogical dig next door (the fenced off vacant land next door) and that Paul Hogan had his after party launch for Crocodile Dundee in LA at The Australian Hotel. Accomodation is also available. Beer Serving:
Of the last few beers one can ask for a taste if they have never had one before. What's in a Bottle:
Seating Arrangement:mainly chairs and tables, some seating at the bar and some tall tables and stools Food/Type:Gourmet pizzas mainly but some salads, wedges etc. Ten out of ten for the food Pool Tables:No Poker Machines:Yes, in a side room JukeBox and Selection:No Decor:it's 1900s pub Crowd:LOcals, suits, people looking for a good beer and bridge climbers Operating Hours: Live Music:No TAB:No Other Entertainment: Beer, and there is a drink yourself around Australia club Map:See The Map Surrounding Suburbs:Millers Point, CBD, Pyrmont ![]()
