Shabby but comfortable. That is how one of my friends described the Australian Hotel. I would go one bit further is that it felt like an old shoe. In saying that I mean that I could see myself drinking there again and it felt like a place I could call home.Art deco. From the outside it has all the features of an art deco pub and this translates inside as well. This is a pub that has been partly renovated but still retains the charms of a pub. The pub itself is on the corner of Broadway and Abecrombie St's and backs on to the soon to be closed Calton Brewery. The main doors are right on the corner, the pool table being just inside the door (Just be careful not to hit the balls off the table). The bar is peninsula style and juts out. There is no separate room for the pokies but I do believe they only had approx 8 and they are tucked around to the right as you walk into the pub. In the front section of the pub you have a combination of seating, from your regulation tall tables and chairs through to comfy looking couches along the wall. As one progresses around the corner out the back you enter the bistro dining area (though still very much part of the main bar area), here one finds the tables and chairs. As regular readers would know I like it when a pub splits it self into many different areas and behind the dining area is a room toitself with a few couches and coffee table. The perfect place to relax at the end of the nite. Of course this pub also has a decent beer garden out back. As stated above be careful when playing pool or you could be chasing the balls down Broadway or Abecrombie if the doors are open. Riddle me this Batman, why do pubs insist on having Red and Yellow balls only (and I know if they get pinched etc) as I do believe it does take away from the game and it does mean you cannot play nineball. The lounges that are scattered around look like they are from the 60's and 70's nice touch for the area and they are inviting. Along the walls there are pictures of the pub and brewery showing the past 100 years. The crowd is basically locals, students and workers but generally a good mix, the night that we are there it is trivia night and there are approx 8 other teams plus a large group out back in the beer garden (trivia guy gets the thumbs up - triv is Thursday nights). Also often here you will see signs outside saying free pool or sausage sizzle.. On the topic of food typical pub fare with a few curries thrown in (apparently the Tandori Burger is very nice). Decent servings and decent prices. For those needing accomodation this place still offers this upstairs. The place does have a video jukebox but the selection is fairly average, once again another MMM jukebox. But a good selection of beers including Carlton Black a few types of Coopers and Stella which they pour into Stella branded glasses. Beer Serving:
